Barbados (Digicel) SIM Instructions

Please be sure to read these instructions prior to departing for Barbados. If you're consulting your phone's user guide, please defer to the instructions below with regard to the use of your Barbados SIM card. (Phone manuals are written in general terms.)

Requirements:
A GSM cellular phone with no service-provider lock. If you are unsure whether your phone is locked or not, test it with a SIM card from a service provider other than your own. The phone must be capable of functioning in the 900 MHz GSM band. (More bands are ok.) Note: This SIM card is incompatible with the Ericsson R520 phone.

Your Barbados SIM Card Cell Phone Number:
The Barbados SIM card is enclosed in an envelope (containing your Barbados Cell Phone number, security PIN and PUK) which is locally referred to in Barbados as a "Flex Pack". Your Barbados Cellular Phone number will begin 1 (246)...

Dialing information
Barbados is part of the North American Numbering Plan. In order for people to call your Barbados cell phone number from the US and Canada, they dial as if they are dialing a number in another area code. They would dial 1-246 plus the 7-digit phone number. To call back to the US, one dials 1 + the desired area code and phone number. Keep this in mind when programming phone numbers into your phone's address book, and please be sure to inform anyone who has your Barbados cell phone number as to the proper dialing sequence in order to ensure you receive your calls.

To call the UK or another non-North American address, you would dial 011 followed by the country code and the number. (Just as if you were calling from the US!)

Important: Most US toll free numbers are not accessable from overseas. Be sure to get valid international numbers prior to your departure.

What are the dialing instructions between Digicel mobiles and landlines?
When dialing from landlines to Digicel numbers, simply put one (1) before the seven digits of the Digicel number you would like to dial. When dialing from a Digicel Mobile to any landline within Barbados, simply dial all seven digits of the number you are trying to reach. When dialing to toll free numbers, one should dial 1-888-toll free number.

Preparing your phone for use in Barbados:

  1. Be sure the phone battery is charged and that your charger is in good working order.
  2. Snap out the Barbados Digicel SIM chip from the SIM card and insert the chip into your GSM Phone with the metal portion facing down as to make contact with the contact prongs. (You will usually find your phone's SIM tray underneath the battery of your GSM cell phone.)
  3. Power-on your cell phone
  4. Enter the 4 digit PIN1 code. (We strongly recommend disabling the PIN-check feature. See below.)
  5. You may set your phone's time settings and enter numbers into your address book, but do not attempt to activate your service before you arrive in Barbados.

Activating Your Service:

  1. Go to Barbados
  2. Turn on your phone–it should automatically detect the local GSM network
  3. Your first call activates your prepaid account

About the PIN Code:
Your Digicel SIM card comes by default with a PIN (Personal Identification Number) lock code enabled. This is designed to protect the SIM card from unauthorized access but more often than not becomes a nuisance. To disable requests for the PIN code every time you turn on the phone, you'll need to consult your phone manual under "PIN Check", or "SIM lock" to determine how to disable prompts for the PIN code.  The PUK code is to be used if you mis-enter the PIN code.

Network Detection:
GSM networks broadcast their presence, so your phone will display the name of a local GSM carrier when turned on. If you get a message to the effect of "No network detected", you probably need to manually set your handset to switch to a foreign GSM band. Most GSM carriers in North America use 1900 MHz, while those in other parts of the world use 900/1800 MHz. To change your GSM band, consult your phone manual under "Network".

Checking Your Balance:
To do a "FLEXcheck", follow these steps:

  1. Type *120# into the phone and press Send
  2. Check the screen on your phone - the confirmation message with your balance will be displayed.

Adding Call Credit:
Your Barbados Digiflex SIM card has an initial airtime credit of $20 BBD ($10 USD) which includes $10 BBD preloaded on the SIM and a $10 BBD airtime voucher. Additional credit is available through the purchase of airtime or FLEXcard vouchers, as they are referred to locally (not another SIM card), in Barbados. FLEXcard airtime vouchers are available in the following denominations:

  • $10 BBD ($5.60 USD)
  • $20 BBD ($9 USD)
  • $50 BBD ($15 USD)
  • $75 BBD ($26.20 USD)

Once you have purchased a recharge card, simply follow these easy instructions to "FLEXtext" (add credit):

  • Carefully remove the scratch-off coating on the back of the card to reveal your voucher code
  • Type *121*VOUCHER NUMBER# into the phone and press Send
  • Check the screen on your phone - the confirmation message with your balance will be displayed.

Customer Service:
If you have questions or problems about your service or if you'd like to enable international roaming, Digicel Barbados customer service can be reached by dialing 100 or 102 from the cell phone, 24 hours a day. To reach from a landline, dial +1 246 434-3444.

For problems with your cellular phone, contact Cellular Abroad at 1-310-862-7100 or email support@cellularabroad.com. If you're having a service issue, please call Cellular Abroad or relay a message to us through a contact back in North America and include any alternate phone numbers as well as the best time for us to call. Usually there is a simple fix. (It's also important to document any problems while you're abroad instead of after your return.)

Service Life:
Your SIM card is initially valid for 30-days from when you activate your account in Barbados. Everytime you add airtime you have an additional 30-days of service from the date of recharge. Any credit not used after 30 days is forfeited. If you do not recharge your account within 2-months your Mobile phone number will be recycled and any remaining airtime credit on your Barbados SIM card will be forfeited. To get connected again you will be required to purchase another SIM card.

Note: Toll free 800 numbers based in the US can not be called from overseas cell phones in most cases. If you are able to connect to an 800 number in the US, you will be charged for an international outgoing call.
