Please be sure to read these instructions prior to departing for Japan. If you're consulting your phone's user guide, please defer to the instructions below with regard to the use of your Japan Phone. (Phone manuals are written in general terms.)

Allow at least one week for registration of your prepaid service! Please remember to follow-up your order with a color scan of your passport (all pages with information) and your driver's license (to document your home address) plus your Japan address—a hotel address is fine—in either jpg or pdf file format mailed to japan@cellularabroad.com. (please call or email us if you have questions on these steps!!!)

Your Japan Cell Phone Number:
Your Japan cellular phone number will come together with your Japan cell phone package. You will find the number on the back of the phone, starting with "090" or “080.

Dialing Instructions:
To make international calls, dial 010, country code, telephone number, send key. For example, to call our customer service team, you would dial 010 1 310 862 7100.

For people in the US to call you on your Japan Phone, they will need to dial 011+81+(drop the 0) your Japan Phone number.  The zero at the front of your Japan Phone number is only used when someone is calling you from a Japanese phone.  For Example, if your Japan Phone number is 090 9813 1234, the dialing sequence from the us would be 011 81 90 9813 1234.

Important: Most US toll free numbers are not accessable from overseas. Be sure to get valid international numbers prior to your departure.

Activating Your Service:

  • Go To Japan
  • Charge your cellphone
  • Dial 1400 + the phone icon
  • Press 2
  • Press the phone icon to end call
  • Your phone is now registered

Checking Your Credit:
You may check your remaining call credit at any time by dialing 1400 and the option 1. Press 9 to finish.

Adding Talk Time:
You may purchase recharge cards at 7-Elevens, AU mobile stores and most other convenience shops. Recharge cards (called the PreCa) are available in denominations of 3,000 and 5,000 Yen.

  • Scratch off the silver scratch off area on your phone card to expose the 15 digit PIN.
  • Dial 1400 and then the send key.
  • Follow the instructions and press 2
  • Input the 15-digit card number and press the # sign.
  • Push the phone icon to end call
  • You have now added additional talk time to your phone

Customer Service:
You may call the J-Phone Customer Service in Japan by dialing 157 from your handset. This number is toll free. For problems with your cellular phone, contact Cellular Abroad at +1-310-862-7100 or email support@cellularabroad.com. If you're having a service issue, please call Cellular Abroad or relay a message to us through a contact back in North America and include any alternate phone numbers as well as the best time for us to call. Usually there is a simple fix. (It's also important to document any problems while you're abroad instead of after your return.) Our business hours are 8AM to 5PM Pacific Time, 7 days a week.

Changing phone to English
 In order to change your instructions to English, you must dial 1400, send key. A Japanese guidance message will be played back. Press 3 for select instruction language, and then 2 to choose English. Confirm your choice by pressing #. Press 9 to finish.

Service Life:
The initial expiration period of the Japan phone is 60 days from the activation date. You can, however, extend the valid period up to 360 days by adding additional talk time.

Note: Toll free 800 numbers based in the US can not be called from overseas cell phones in most cases. If you are able to connect to an 800 number in the US, you will be charged for an international outgoing call.
