Introduction

Cellular Abroad's Spanish SIM card is an exceptional value for travelers to Spain who need to make and receive calls and/or have data service on their cell phone or tablet. Carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint offer roaming rates for travelers to Spain that are either very expensive or substandard services that on the surface, appear to be a great deal. For example, T-Mobile offers "free data" but when you go use the "free data", the service is so slow that it is unusable. The Spain SIM we offer includes a generous 6GB of mobile data at 4G/LTE speed and uses the Orange network. 9GB is enough data for the vast majority of travelers to Spain. In addition, all incoming calls / texts are always free. We include 5 Euros of credit to make outgoing calls. You can easily get more credit while in Spain by going to virtually any convenience stores. We also strongly recommend using apps such as Skype and WhatsApp to make your phone calls. These apps use very little data hence rendering the price of the calls virtually free. The Spain SIM also works in any other European country that is a member of the EU. There are no roaming surcharges. Therefore, if you plan to travel to other parts of Europe, you can use this SIM card as if you were still in Spain. The SIM card offers 30 days of service. Purchase additional 30 days of service for $59. You can order additional 30 day service plans together with your SIM card or as needed.

US Number Add-on

For an additional $19, you can also add a US phone number (we assign) to your SIM card on top of the Spanish number already provided. Each $19 bundle gives you 6 hours of incoming calls to your US number. You can forward your current US number to the new one or simply give people back home the new number. This will save them the expense of them having to place an international call to Spain. The US number does not forward text messages.

Phone Compatibility

The Spain SIM card is a 3-1 adaptable SIM card and works with any unlocked phone. Please make sure that your cell phone is unlocked. Tip: all LTE Verizon phones are unlocked, most other carriers phones are unlocked. If you bought your iPhone directly from Apple, it is unlocked.

You can use your Spain SIM card anywhere in the EU as long as you activate it first within Spain. For example, if you are traveling to Portugal, or anywhere else in the EU, your SIM will have the same call and data plan as if you were in Spain.

It was convenient to have the Spain SIM card in hand, installed and activated prior to our arrival in Spain. Worth the extra cost. Only complaint, we had to supply all sort of personal info in order to activate (Spanish requirement). We were supposed to be advised when card was activated, but never were. Fortunately, all went well.

The phone worked great. Just had to turn it on and it connected to the network immediately. Calls were clear in both directions. On a couple of instances a redial was necessary to establish a connection but that was probably due to the dense city environment.

Card and Instructions didn't match

EA from Santa Fe, NM

starstarstarstarstar 1 - not recommended

Somehow the card the was delivered did not match the web description at the time or the instructions that came with the card. I registered the card before I left as instructed but when I inserted the card in Spain, although data worked, I got a message or two per hour saying there was no credit on the card. When I contacted Cellular Abroad I was told I has to send a text message (not in the instructions) to Orange but they didn't tell what what the message was or the number. After another set of emails, the gave me the number and message, which i sent only to get the immediate reply that there was no credit on the card (and I continued to receive texts telling me the same from Orange, Finally on the third day, Cellular Abroad put the credit on the card. There many other things in the instructions that didn't match the card; one is that the instructions (and the website at the time) did not say the card was only good for 15 days. The instructions say it's good for a year if you have credit; the number in the instructions to find out how much data credit you have is non working number. The amount of time you have for outgoing calls does not match the website. Customer service did not respond to either email I sent them about the wrong number in the instructions,

Although the card finally worked correctly but ti wasted 3 days, was only good for 15 days, contrary to what I ordered. It would have been a lot easier to get off the plane and buy a card directly from Orange.

Good coverage. Somewhat confusing 'non-use' charge until the card expired. The card was active longer than the time period that I was in Spain but there is a monthly fee if the card is not used. The fee should not drive the account negative however. Once the account is a a zero balance, the fee should not be applied.

This is an excellent plan for 2005, but it needs to be upgraded (or a "plus" option offered) to include 2 GB of data. Smartphones--everyone who travels has one--are universally loved for their Google Maps overseas, but this plan has such a mingy amount of data (10 MB/day) that you'll hit the limit fast as soon as you start using maps (or sending photos, let alone videos.)

Spain SIM card FAQs

Will the Spain SIM card work with my phone?

As long as your cell phone is unlocked and has the 900 and 1800 Mhz bands, you can make and receive phone calls and as long as your phone has the 2100 3G band, you can use data. Please note that your phone must be unlocked. Some carriers, mostly notably Verizon, sell all their LTE phones such as the iPhone 6 unlocked.

How do I know if my phone is unlocked?

You cannot tell physically if your cell phone is unlocked. Most newer Verizon smartphones are unlocked while most other carriers phones come locked but may be unlockable. If you are with AT&T and you put a different SIM card (such as T-Mobile) in and it picks up a network, it is unlocked. Conversely, if you put another SIM card in and it says, "enter subsidy code" or similar, it is locked. Call your carrier to check to see if your phone is unlocked or if it qualifies for being unlocked.

Do you offer micro and nano SIM cards?

Yes. They are available during checkout. There is no extra charge to get a micro or nano SIM card for Spain.

Why don't I just purchase a SIM card when I get to Spain?

While this SIM card is available in Spain, the plan we offer is not readily available. Our Spain SIM designed specifically for the travelers and has much better rates than just any SIM card you may happen upon in Spain. In addition, purchasing the SIM card before your trips means that you are ready to go as soon as you land in Spain and you will have your number prior to your departure. Plus, the US number add on is a Cellular Abroad exclusive.

Do I need a special phone for Spain?

As long as your phone has the appropriate bands (most do) and is unlocked, it will work.

What happens if I have issues?

Most issues are resolvable. We are the US distributor for Happy Movil, the carrier. You can contact us or them with any issues.

I will be in Spain for several months? Is this the best SIM card for me?

This is a great SIM card for the study abroad student or for anyone staying in Spain for any amount of time - short or long. Yes, we believe that this is your best option.

I will be in traveling outside of Spain on occasion. Will my SIM card still work?

Yes it will but, you will need to make sure you have ample credit on your SIM card. In addition, we do not recommend that you call back to the United States if at all possible as outgoing calls while roaming outside of Spain are expensive. Incoming calls are affordable.

Can I test the SIM card in the United States or Canada before my trip?

You can put it in your phone to make sure that your phone is not locked but, you cannot use it in the United States or Canada as you will consume the credit that is on the SIM and then it will not work when you arrive in Spain.

How good is the coverage?

In a word; excellent. The coverage is on Orange, Espana, one of the largest carriers in Spain.

How long does the SIM card last?

The initial credit is good for 30 days from the time you arrive in Spain. If you use up the credit, you will not be able to use the SIM card unless you put more credit on it. Please note that you will have standard rates until the initial 30 day period transpires.

Can I get additional 30 day bundles of service?

Yes. You can get additional 30 day bundles up front when purchasing your SIM card or whenever you want after purchasing it. If you add 30 day bundles after the purchase, you will need to make sure that you don't go over the 30 day period.

Will it work as soon as I land in Spain?

Yes it will. You will have to email Cellular Abroad some information in order to register the SIM card. Spanish law requires cell phone users to provide an address in Spain, their name and their passport number. The registration information is provided together with the SIM card.

How much will it cost people in the USA/Canada to call me on my Spanish number?

That depends on their plan. While incoming calls are free for you in Spain, the person calling you will have to pay to call you. A great option is to add the "US Number" feature to your service. This makes it affordable to reach you as the calling party will not have to make an international call to Spain. Each $19 will give you 360 minutes of incoming calls on a US number.

Can I keep my usual US cell phone number ?

Yes you can. Purchase the US Number add on and forward your current number to the new one (ask your carrier what the procedure is). This is ideal for business travelers who need to be reached at all times but is also a double edged sword for travelers going for a bit of rest and relaxation as anyone who calls your usual number will reach you. Another option is just to give a select few your new US number.
