It is unlikely that your US or Canadian cellular carrier offers cell phone service in Cuba. Options are extremely limited for travelers going to Cuba and needing cellular service and in fact, Cellular Abroad (formerly the National Geographic Travel Phone) is probably the only cell phone rental provider in the United States catering to this need.
The service includes 1GB of data, 10 minutes of calls (local or international) and 50sms messages (local or international). As “regular” calling is limited, the vast majority of travelers use calling apps to call. We recommend Talkatone, a free calling app allowing unlimited calls and texts to the USA and Canada. This will use the included 1GB data allotment. As calls through apps use very little data, you will have approximately 3000 minutes of calls back to the USA. For calls within Cuba, you can use one of the many calling apps available on the market.
To rent, simply select the type of cell phone you want (make sure that it is at least an iPhone 8 so you can download apps), enter the departure and return dates and the cost of the rental will be calculated. We also recommend adding on the insurance (available in the cart) as Cuba seems to have a high petty crime rate associated with cell phone theft.
